Let Your Freak Flag Fly: On Halloween, Self-Expression, and Loving the Differences

“When you celebrate your own weird, you leave more room for others to shine.”

Halloween might be my favorite holiday of all time.

When I was a kid, my mom sewed my sister and me a new costume every year—Jasmine, Snow White… yep, I was that sparkle-obsessed princess child. Except for the year she got extra creative: she brought home four oversized cardboard boxes that had originally been filled with toilet paper, emptied them, and hand-painted each one into a giant present. We wore them proudly, complete with bows on top. Meanwhile, my sister Devin? A gorilla. A full-on, hand-stitched, movie-quality gorilla. We still wish that costume fit today. 🦍

Looking back, I think I’ve only skipped dressing up maybe twice in my whole life. There’s something about Halloween that has always felt like permission. Permission to play. To be weird. To experiment. To see what it feels like to walk in someone else’s shoes (or claws or fairy wings).

And maybe that’s why I love it so much—because it’s not just about candy or costumes. It’s about freedom of expression.

When we give ourselves space to express who we are—through color, creativity, humor, or a good dose of weird—we also open up a little more compassion for others. It’s hard to judge someone else’s “different” when you’re celebrating your own.

That belief is woven into everything I create with ABD Culture. My jewelry is made from upcycled bike tubes—scraps turned into something beautiful, bold, and uniquely you. Every pair of earrings or bracelet says: you’re allowed to take up space, you’re allowed to be expressive, and you’re allowed to be yourself.

When we feel comfortable expressing who we are, we make more room for others to do the same. That’s when judgment fades and connection grows.

So here’s to Halloween—and to the spirit of showing up fully as ourselves. May we keep that same playful, accepting, freak-flag energy all year long.

🎃 Be bold. Be weird. Be kind.
And if you want your jewelry to match your vibe—lightweight, waterproof, unapologetically different—you know where to find it.
